Ngorongoro Lodge in Tanzania: An Eco-Friendly and Volcanic Destination

By Anna Brillon Most high-end hotels and resorts are known for their scenic locations, along beaches or on mountainsides. But have you ever heard of a posh hotel located inside a volcano crater? If not, it might be time to take a nature trek to the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in the wildlife preserves of Tanzania. Not to worry, the volcano is no longer active.

Being the first eco-friendly five-star hotel of its kind, Ngorongoro aims to please its guests and bring them closer to nature.  Guests have the option of joining a safari led by professional Tanzanian rangers. The hotel’s exterior is built from native materials, such as wood and stone, but the interiors are decorated with a unique mix of indigenous and modern styles.

Besides being perched along a crater, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is special because of its environment-friendly efforts. The hotel uses energy-efficient light bulbs as well as participates in a glass recycling program to reduce harmful waste. All their linens and laundry are sun-dried and wind-dried, plus leftover food is donated to pig farms which are run by Catholic nuns. If you’re planning an eco-friendly safari holiday soon, be sure to have a hefty budget. Hotel room rates start at $700 during the off-season and can reach up to $1,500 during peak season.
