With the ever increasing pressures to climb up the social ladder, it’s not a hidden fact that most of us are tired of living. The current space and time that we live in has become very combative and ambitious—so much so that we’ve become mere machines aspiring to win the world. However, the continuous burden placed on our bodies since birth has led to detrimental effects such as stress, depression and fraught relationships. Trying to cope with these effects brings us more fatigue, sometimes to the point of over-exhaustion.

In search of a spiritual workout

Living in New York for work, Poornima Wijendra too was a victim of such exhaustion and was looking for the metaphysics of life. Wanting to engage herself in an activity that will not only guarantee a physical workout out but also a fuller engagement of the mind and spirit, she came across Kundalini yoga. Enthusiastic about her new discovery, she started reading on kundalini yoga and ended up buying a DVD that introduced its basics. Quite determined to experience a change, she started practicing kundalini yoga with the instructions provided by the DVD, to find herself experiencing the promised results. Sometime later she felt the necessity of a teacher and entered the Golden Bridge Yoga Centre. Witnessing the unfathomable change that was taking place within her, she then enrolled in a teacher training program at the centre under the guru Yogi Bhajan and became a qualified and experienced yoga teacher and a member of the International Kundalini Yoga Teachers’ Association. “I always thought about the esoteric aspect of human life and contemplated on an equilibrium state” mentioned Wijendra when talking about her inspirational foray into yoga.

“As human beings we are provided with a formula to be happy from the very moment we are born” explained Wijendra, as a start, to elucidate the continuous struggle of life. It is this formula that conditions the lives of all human beings ahead. Culture, religion, class, caste and other such factors spell directions to the lives irrespective of human feelings, emotions, consciousness and spirit. Thus, it creates extremely complicated tensions in human lives, leading to severe states of depression, stress, relationship issues, dilemmas in deciding wants, desires, dislikes and so on. These formulas also manipulate the human being either to live in the past, a representation, or in the future, an imagination.  Hence human beings are denied to live in the present, the very temporal space that one should be living in.

Unleashing creative energy

“The world is filled with dynamic energy that is in a state of flux. It is from this cosmic energy that we draw energy to help ourselves ease-off,” described Wijendra giving vent to explaining kundalini yoga. In a nutshell kundalini yoga unleashes the creative energy in the human being, allowing us to use energy from the cosmos. The exercises and meditations used in kundalini synchronize the chakras in the body by bringing out human potential that is at the bottom of the spine in a form of chakra.  The human mind which is constantly engaged in a cycle of thought and reaction needs to be subdued. Wijendra mentions that the human mind acquires around 1,000 thoughts per blink of an eye and that it latches on to a thought that attracts it more than the others. This thought then transforms into a feeling and later shifts into an emotion, leading to a desire. Desire then results in an action and is followed by a reaction from the cosmos.  It is this cycle that keeps us devoid of the present and consciousness itself.

Living in the present

Wijendra finds that yoga is a preparation for meditation. “Meditation allows you to subdue yourself, to stop the mind and escape the cycle of thought and reaction.” Kundalini as a meditation interferes in this cycle by subduing the mind, resulting in it re-gaining consciousness, which enables us to live within the present temporal space. Thus, living with consciousness results in drawing cosmic energy from the universe and it eases stress, depression and other complications in life as it allows a wider and deeper insight in to the esoteric life. The quality of the being depends on the quality of thought that it latches on to and kundalini contributes to improving the quality of thought, thus elevating the quality of being and the potential. The cycle of thought and reaction also manipulates the human to take the mind, ego and the body as oneself, generating a false identity which degrades the quality of the being. Kundalini helps you to operate through a truer essence of life that permits a clearer insight in to life with a supple mind. This phenomenon results in understanding the human beyond ego, mind and body, resulting in a beautiful journey of understanding the metaphysics of life. Helping establish a more awakened and vibrant state of living.

Operating with her true essence of spirit, Wijendra is quite positive to engage more people in the process of re-gaining consciousness to help them perceive life in multi-dimensional ways.  With this mind, she conducts sessions to teach interested individuals kundalini, to initiate a life towards a conscious present.  Starting off with warm up exercises in her sessions, she focuses more on the breathing aspect. She claims that breathing should be the fundamental lesson in our life since it’s the starting point of consciousness. After Pranyam, the breathing exercise which runs throughout the session, she dwells on the stretching exercises which are followed by Gong meditation, a type of deep relaxation. Her sessions are concluded with meditation using mantras to the sound of vehicles.

“The source of your happiness is you,” claims Wijendra, filled with positive energy in her very presence. Meditation enables you to see the realities of life in a neutral manner and permits the human to perceive life as it is. Living with the present consciousness allows us to connect with the cosmic energy, which provides the spirit with positive vibes of the universe. The balance of life is the most important state to be achieved and meditation of any sort is the key to achieving that.

Kundalini Yoga

“Kundalini” yoga is also known as the yoga of awareness; its focus is on self-awareness and delivering an experience of your highest consciousness. The technology of kundalini yoga is a science of the mind and body, to elevate the spirit, which has no boundaries, no discrimination. Therefore it is for everyone, universal and nondenominational.

In the ancient tradition that is yoga, kundalini yoga is a householder path; that is, it has always been practiced by those with families and jobs as opposed to a nunciate’s path of celibacy and removal from society, which was the usual path of a yogi.

The primary objective of kundalini yoga is to awaken the full potential of human awareness in each individual; that is, recognize our awareness, refine that awareness, and expand that awareness to our unlimited self. Clear any inner duality, create the power to listen deeply, cultivate inner stillness, and prosper and deliver excellence in all that we do.

The focus of kundalini yoga is on one’s personal experience and awareness through the practice of kriya and naad. We awaken the kundalini in order to be able to call upon the full potential of the nervous and glandular systems and to balance the subtle system of chakras and meridians within the body. Kriya is an orchestrated pattern of movements, sound, pranayam, mudras, concentration and meditation that automatically guides the energies of the body and the mind to a specific result or change of consciousness.

Kundalini yoga does not rely on any one of these techniques per se, although we use many. Instead, it is the unique and tested syntax within the structure of each kriya as shared by Yogi Bhajan, which provides steady, predictable progress and which leverages these basic functions of the body and the mind to create rapid, sustainable personal growth and healing. In this tradition, meditation is not considered separate from asana or yoga—it is integral to the practice. The exercises in the kriya bring the body and mind to a state, where deep meditation is easily achieved.

Our fundamental objective is to awaken the power of the individual and to unleash the creative energy to excel—to experience their infinity and fulfil their personal destiny.
